  • Meta made its customer support AI bot, Meta Business Agent, available globally on WhatsApp on June 3.

  • It answers questions, recommends products, books appointments, qualifies leads and hands off to a human.

  • It is also live in Instagram DMs, and Meta is testing overnight chat briefings.

For years WhatsApp was a place your customers messaged you. Meta just turned it into software that answers them.

What it does

WhatsApp Now Has An AI Employee, And It Works Everywhere

Meta made Meta Business Agent available globally within WhatsApp on June 3, after nearly two years of testing AI agents for customer support in countries including India and Mexico.

The task list is wider than a typical chatbot. The agent answers customer questions, recommends products, books appointments, qualifies sales leads, and reroutes queries to a person when it needs to. It also runs inside Instagram DMs.

Meta is testing something more interesting on top: daily briefings of chats that happened overnight, with insights. That is the difference between a bot that replies and a tool that tells you what happened while you slept.

The strategic read is clear. Meta is infusing AI into WhatsApp in a bid to turn it into a viable piece of workflow software for small and medium businesses. Not a messaging app with a bot bolted on. Workflow software.

Why India matters here

Notice where this got tested. India and Mexico, for nearly two years, before a global launch.

That is not a coincidence. WhatsApp is the default business channel across huge parts of India. Small businesses run entire operations through it, from catalogues to orders to payment follow-ups, often with no CRM behind it at all.

If you are a small seller in Jabalpur or Jaipur, this agent is not competing with your support software. It is competing with you personally answering messages at 11pm.

Three honest considerations before you switch it on.

Lead qualification by AI means the agent decides which of your customers is worth your time. Check what it decides and how often it is wrong, because that mistake costs revenue, not goodwill.

Appointment booking is the highest-risk feature. A bot that books a slot that does not exist creates a worse customer experience than a slow human reply.

And the strategic one. The more of your customer conversation runs through Meta’s agent, the more Meta understands your customers and the less you do. That knowledge is your business.

Use it. Just do not hand over the whole relationship.
