ZuriQ, a spinout from ETH Zurich, raised a $25.5 million seed round led by Quantonation to scale a genuinely different approach to trapped-ion quantum computing: a two-dimensional chip architecture, where most competitors are still building in one dimension.

Why the Architecture Matters

Trapped-ion quantum computers work by controlling individual charged atoms with lasers to perform calculations. Industry leaders like IonQ and Quantinuum have built their systems around a 1D architecture, arranging ions in a line.

ZuriQ’s bet is that a 2D layout, arranging ions across a grid rather than a chain, can scale more efficiently as systems grow toward the thousands of qubits needed for genuinely useful quantum computation, rather than hitting the practical bottlenecks a purely linear design runs into at scale.

It’s a meaningfully contrarian architectural bet in a field where most well-funded players have already committed to one approach and are racing to execute it, rather than reopening the design question.

What the Money Is For

The round, backed by Quantonation, Forward.one, Extantia, and Firgun Ventures alongside earlier investors, brings ZuriQ’s total raised to about $29.7 million.

The company says the funding will go toward scaling its 2D processor design, growing its engineering team, and accelerating R&D. As a fresh academic spinout entering a field already crowded with well-capitalized incumbents, ZuriQ’s path forward will depend heavily on whether its architectural bet actually delivers a measurable scaling advantage once systems move past small prototype stages, something that will take real hardware milestones, not funding announcements, to prove out.
